Journey:
Sanjay underwent Urology training in England from 1981 to 1986. He was trained by Mr Richard Turner Warwick, considered as father of urethral reconstruction. Dr Kulkarni returned to motherland India to serve the people of his country. His wife Dr Jyotsna Kulkarni and Sanjay were pioneer in introducing Laparoscopy in India. They started India’s first animal lab for Laparoscopy training.
Institute:
Established Centre for Reconstructive Urology in 1995. On 1Jan 2023. “UROKUL” Kulkarni UroSurgery Institute in Pune a 100 bed single speciality hospital and training centre was inaugurated. The centre performs one of the largest number of Genito-Urinary Reconstructive Surgeries in the world today. In 2023 , 654 urethroplasties were performed The centre is ethical and no patient is denied surgery for economic grounds.
Training Next Gen :
Kulkarni School of Urethral Surgery was established in 2006. The centre is engaged in permanent educational activities for urologists who are interested in the in-depth training in reconstructive urethral surgery. They conduct an operative workshop on a weekend once every month where about 8-10 Urologists from India and abroad attend inside the OR and watch surgeries LIVE. Kulkarni School of Urethral Surgery is very popular amongst the urologists. This is a purely academic activity with no registration fees.
International Faculty:
Dr Sanjay Kulkarni was invited as a faculty to demonstrate urethroplasties in 50 countries. He is nicknamed Workshop Kulkarni. He has travelled extensively teaching reconstructive urology and creating a Reconstructive leader in each country he visited.
Innovations and contribution :
Dr Kulkarni invented many techniques of reconstruction. The “Kulkarni Urethroplasty” for pan urethral stricture is popular around the world and is published in Hinman’s Atlas of Urology, American text book. Dr Kulkarni has authored chapter on Urethra and Penis in the 2022 Edition of Love and Bailey, Practice of Surgery.
Prestigious Awards:
2016 –“Dr BC Roy” award by the President of India for developing new speciality
2011- “President’s Gold Medal” by the Urology Society of India for outstanding contribution to Urology in India.
2017 – Honorary membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
2018 Honorary member of Urology Society of Australia and New Zealand
2019- Honorary member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons
2023- “ Life Time Achievement award” from GURS
2023- SIU–Felix Guyon Award for Outstanding service to the Society.
Positions:
President of the Society of Genito Urinary Reconstructive Surgeons in 2014.
President of the Society International de Urology, SIU (2019-21).
